Creating an AIM Set

Creating an AIM set consists of: (1) assigning existing virtual volumes as source and destination volumes, and (2) associating specific source virtual volumes with specific destination virtual volumes. Creating an AIM set is performed on the AIM Source Server using the AIM Source Manager snap-in.

AIM allows mirroring between a single source virtual volume and a single destination virtual volume. Destination virtual volumes should be from different systems than the source servers. By matching the virtual volumes, data from a specific source will be transferred to a specific destination that you assign.

Creating AIM Source Volumes:

  1. In the console tree, open AIM Source Manager.

  2. Select the  AIM Source Volumes component, and choose New>New AIM Source Volume in the context menu.

  3. In the New AIM Source Volume dialog box, select a volume to be used as a source and click the green down arrow.  Multiple selections can also be made.

  4. Click OK.

  5. Apply the configuration.

Creating AIM Destination Volumes:
  1. In the console tree, open AIM Destination Manager.

  2. Select the  AIM Destination Volumes component, and choose New>New AIM Destination Volume in the context menu.

  3. In the New AIM Destination Volume dialog box, select a volume to be used as a destination and click the green down arrow.  Multiple selections can also be made.

  4. Click OK.

  5. Apply the configuration.

Associating Source and Destination Volumes in a Set:

In the instructions below, AIM sets are created using the New AIM Set dialog box, which allows one or multiple destinations to be assigned to a source virtual volume.  Alternatively, you can use the Properties dialog box to assign a single destination to a source virtual volume, refer to AIM Set Properties.

  1. Open AIM Source Manager.

  2. In the left pane,  expand AIM Source Manager.

  3. In the left pane, select AIM Source Volumes and choose New > New AIM Set from the context menu.

  4. In the Configuration area of the New AIM Set dialog box, select the following from the pull-down menus: Source Volume, Destination Name, and Destination Volume.

CAUTION:  Due to a new feature of Windows Server 2008, all newly discovered SAN volumes will be set Offline. After defining AIM destination virtual volumes, a loopback image of that virtual volume is created.  Use DcsDiskInfo.exe (located in the SANmelody folder) to locate your destination virtual volumes and make a note of the drive number.  Open Computer Management>Storage>Disk Management and set the disks Online.  (Do not Initialize them.)

If the disks are not online, the AIM destination will be unable to destage to the destination virtual volumes, resulting in errors in the Aim Destination log:

ERROR: AsynchReconstructFile WriteFileEx (%lu,%lu) failed (0×00000013)

  1. In the Automatic Setting area, select Flush, Snapshot, or User-Defined Marker from the Type pull-down menu.  Enter Start Time and Interval in the appropriate fields. Refer to Setting Up Services and Commands for more information.

NOTE:  AIM operations should not be scheduled to begin until after the AIM set initialization is complete. (Refer to Initializing AIM Sets.) The status of Automatic Settings configured for AIM sets can be viewed in the AIM Source Manager.

  1. Click Apply and then click OK.

To create AIM Group (optional), refer to Creating AIM Groups.

New data will automatically be prepared for an AIM transfer. Next, you must synchronize the AIM set.
