Data Transfer Modes
AIM allows you to asynchronously mirror disks to a remote storage server using Internet protocols ( IP). AIM allows either of two options for transferring data: File Transfer Protocol (FTP) or Server Message Block (SMB), which uses common Windows File Sharing.
In order to transfer data from the source buffers to the destination buffers, a transfer mode utility must be set up prior to using AIM.
File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

Best for data transfer over long distances.

Uses File Transfer Protocols (in this case Microsoft’s IIS FTP component on the AIM destination) to move AIM files between the source and destination.

Server Message Block (SMB)

Best for transfers on a LAN or Virtual Private Network (VPN).

Uses network shares to move AIM files between the source and destination.

Use only if the source and destination servers are in the same LAN or VPN. (Servers on remote LANs can be accessed through the Internet using PPTP networking protocol.)
