Using SMB Transfer Mode

Server Message Block (SMB), using common Windows File Sharing, is best for data transfers on a LAN or VPN.  (SMB is also known as Common Internet File System or CIFS.)

To use this mode, the source and destination servers must be in the same LAN or VPN. (Systems on a remote LAN can be accessed through the Internet using PPTP networking protocol.) The source server must be able to access public shares on the destination server. During the installation of the AIM software, the designated buffer is assigned a share with a share name of AimBuffer and is automatically shared. This allows you to access the destination buffer.

To use SMB Transfer Mode:

  1. Create a user account on the source server and assign Administrator privileges to it. Refer to Administrator Privilege, if necessary.

  2. You must establish Log on as a Service privileges to the account in order to use AIM. In this case the AIM Source Service is configured to ‘log on’ as a user that has “full control” permissions to the AIM buffer share on the destination server. Refer to Log on as Service Privilege, if necessary (Note: AIM services on both AIM source and destination servers must use the same logon account and password).
