Using Snapshot to Restore When a Source Data Disk Fails

This section provides the procedures for restoring using Snapshot in case of a source data disk failure.  Use the following table to step through the procedures in order. Refer to the associated topics for additional instructions, if necessary.

Step

Process

Steps 1-4 are performed at the original SOURCE site.

1

Plug in a new disk or create new volumes on the AIM Source server, as necessary.

2

On the AIM Source system, create a virtual volume.

3

On the AIM Source server, assign the new virtual volume to be the new AIM Destination virtual volume. Refer to Creating AIM Destination Volumes.

4

Delete the original AIM set. Refer to Deleting AIM Set Associations.

Steps 5-8 are performed at the original DESTINATION site.

5

On the AIM Destination server, remove the original AIM Destination volume. Refer to Removing AIM Set Candidates.

6

Create a Snapshot relationship on the AIM Destination server. “AIM” the snapshot back to the original Source server in order to recreate the Source virtual volume. Follow these steps:

  1. Create a Snapshot relationship on the AIM Destination server. Use the original AIM Destination virtual volume as the Snapshot source and a new virtual volume as the Snapshot destination. Use the Snapshot Utility to enable the Snapshot relationship. Refer to Snapshot Manager for Snapshot details if necessary.

  2. Assign the Snapshot destination virtual volume to be the new AIM Source virtual volume. Refer to Creating AIM Set Candidates.

  3. Assign the original AIM Source server to be the new AIM Destination server. Refer to Configuring Destination Servers.

  4. Create a new AIM set between the new AIM Source virtual volume (snapshot destination) and the new AIM Destination virtual volume. Refer to Creating an AIM Set.

  5. Synchronize the source and destination virtual volumes. Refer to Initializing AIM Sets.

7

Check the AIM Destination Log to ensure the initialization has finished and the data has transferred to the original AIM Source server. Then, the AIM set used for recovery can be deleted. Refer to Deleting AIM Set Associations.

8

If desired, recreate a new AIM set (with the same settings as the original AIM set) using the virtual volume with the transferred data (from Step 4) as the AIM Source virtual volume and the original AIM Destination virtual volume.
