Changing Existing Disk Partitions

Sometimes it is necessary to change the partition layout of the existing disks in a SANmelody server. For example, partitions no longer being used in virtual volumes may be consolidated or split. Data on virtual volumes will be lost.

WARNING: In Windows Server 2008, partitions may be deleted even if managed by SANmelody software. If deleting partitions in Windows Disk Management, heed all warnings and ensure partitions are NOT being managed by SANmelody before deleting them!

This discussion assumes that you have a virtual volume, which is not mapped to any application servers, and that you wish to change the partition layout underlying that virtual volume.

  1. Delete the virtual volume.  The volumes that were members of that virtual volume are marked previously used.

  1. Apply the configuration.  This will erase the data on the previously used volumes.

  1. Right-click the volume, select Release.  The volume will now have a red icon, indicating that it is no longer under SANmelody management.

  1. Right-click the volume, select Delete.  All references to this volume are removed from the SANmelody configuration

  1. Apply the configuration.

You may now delete or otherwise change the underlying partition in Windows Disk Management.
