Installing SANmelody Software

This section provides instructions for installing DataCore™ SANmelody™ Disk Server Software on storage servers.

SANmelody software keeps a log of all install/uninstall actions. The log is named InstallLog.txt and is located in the Program Files (x86)DataCore SoftwareSANmelody folder.

CAUTION:  These instructions are for a new installation—not a software upgrade.

Before beginning the installation:
  • Ensure you have reviewed and performed the Pre-Installation Steps, which contain important instructions and information that you need prior to installing SANmelody software.

  • Verify that your servers meet the current system requirements defined on the DataCore Software Web site (http://www.datacore.com/products/prod_SANmel_prerequisites.asp).  Ensure Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 is installed on the machine; if not, the installation will terminate. (This software can be downloaded from Microsoft Download Center: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/.)

  • Have your SANmelody software licenses available. If you are licensed for High Availability (HA), each storage server requires a unique license. Install SANmelody software on one storage server at a time.

  • Be prepared to logon to Windows using a local account that has administrator privileges.

Follow these procedures to install on the storage server:
  1. Log on to Windows locally or with the “console” session remotely using a local administrator account.

  2. Save and close all files, programs, and windows. At the end of the installation, it will be necessary to restart the system to finalize the installation process.

  3. Run the SANmelody 3.0 executable file that you downloaded. If the installation wizard does not start automatically, open Windows Explorer and double-click on the executable file.

  4. You may receive a Windows User Account Control message, asking for permission to run the executable file. Click Continue.

  5. The InstallShield Wizard for SANmelody software begins. On the Welcome window, click Next to begin the installation. Respond to the prompts as appropriate to continue through the installation.

  6. On the License Agreement window, click Yes to accept the license terms and continue.

  7. On the Customer Information box, enter the user name and company name and click Next.

  8. On the Choose Destination Location box, you may keep the default location for the SANmelody software files (C:Program Files (x86)DataCore SoftwareSANmelody) or click Browse to select a different location. Click Next to continue.

  9. You will receive a message that you will need to browse to the location of your license file, click OK.

  10. In the Find License File dialog box, browse to the file, select it, and click Open.

  11. On the Ready to Install the Program box, click Install.

  12. The installation begins, you may have to respond to different messages or wizards to successfully complete the installation process.

    • Windows Security Alerts to install DataCore software device drivers; select the Always trust software from DataCore Software Corporation check box to install the remaining drivers without the prompts and click Install to continue.

    • Found New Hardware Wizard may appear during the loading of the DataCore iSCSI Target Driver. Respond as appropriate to configure your hardware.

WARNING:  Important: Choose No on any Microsoft Windows messages asking you if you want to restart your system for “…settings to take effect.” Restarting the system at this time will interrupt the SANmelody software installation and will result in an incomplete installation.

  1. When the installation has completed and the SANmelody Setup Finished window appears, select Yes, I want to restart my computer now and click Finish.

  2. When your computer restarts, log on to the system.  Please be patient, as it may take some time for your system settings to update.  On the desktop, the online Help will open to the Getting Started topic.
CAUTION:  If you have purchased a permanent SANmelody software license, please ensure that you log on to the SANmelody software as “The Administrator.” This is required in order to activate the permanent license in the SANmelody software. After activating the license, you can log on to Windows using any local account with administrator privileges.

  3. If you are licensed for High Availability (HA) and have two storage servers in your SAN, close all SANmelody software snap-ins and Computer Management on the storage server that you just installed, and repeat all the steps above on the second storage server, then continue to the next step.

  4. When both storage servers have SANmelody software  installed, you are ready to begin configuring the SANmelody software on your storage servers. Refer to the Getting Started topic in the online SANmelody Help for a step-by-step guide through a basic SAN configuration.
(The online SANmelody Help and the SANmelody software interface can be opened from Start>All Programs>DataCore Software.)
