Upgrading a License

If you purchased new licensed features or increased storage capacity from your DataCore Sales Representative, you should receive a new license file for each storage server. You must upgrade the license in order to use the new features or capacity of the license. No restart is required to enable new licensed features.

You must also upgrade your license, if you have upgraded a trial license to a permanent license.

  • Permanent licenses can be purchased by contacting DataCore Sales.

  • You should be using the same trial license number that was upgraded by DataCore Sales to a permanent license.  If your new license number (storage server serial number or WWN) does not match your trial license number, you must not upgrade the license using the procedure listed below. Contact DataCore Sales to obtain a valid license.

  • Your license should be activated before upgrading it. Refer to Activating a Permanent License, if necessary.

The license file that you receive will have the name “My_Company_################.lic” where My_Company is the name of your company and where ################ is the license number. For example, if your license file is My_Company_21000030D970BEE1.lic, then the license number is 21000030D970BEE1. The license number is also used as the storage server serial number (or WWN) in the SANmelody environment. Each storage server has a unique license number. The serial number for the new license file must match the serial number for the original license file that is being upgraded.

To Check for Matching Storage Server Serial Number (WWN):
  1. Open the DataCore SANmelody snap-in and select Storage Server in the left pane. Note the 16-digit number shown in the serial number column in the upper-right pane.  In the example below, the serial number to note for this step would be 21000030D970BEE1.

  2. Check your new license file name.  For example, if your license file name is My_Company_21000030D970BEE1.lic, the license number to note in this step would be 21000030D970BEE1.

  3. Open your new license file in Notepad (the same license file from step 2), and note the WWN recorded in the file.  In the example below, the license number to note in this step would be 21000030D970BEE1.

  4. Compare the numbers noted in steps 1, 2, and 3 above.  If they all match, use the procedure listed below to upgrade your license.  If all the numbers do not match, stop. Contact DataCore Sales to obtain a valid license.

To upgrade a license:

Important: You must already have verified that your new license file matches the serial number for the machine you wish to upgrade, using the procedure above.  Do not continue until you verify the WWN in the license file matches the serial number of the machine as displayed in the SANmelody Storage Server snap-in.

  1. Open Windows Explorer.

  2. Navigate to your SANmelody installation folder, usually C:Program FilesDataCore SoftwareSANmelody.  (On x64 platforms, C:Program Files (x86)DataCore SoftwareSANmelody).

  3. Find the existing DcsLicense.lic in the SANmelody installation folder.  This is the older license file you wish to replace.

  4. Rename DcsLicense.lic to DcsLicense.lic.old.

  5. Copy the new license file to the SANmelody installation folder.

  6. Rename the new license file to DcsLicense.lic.

  7. Close and re-open Computer Management so that the SANmelody software picks up the new license information.

If you have a partner, you may have received another license file to match the partner machine.  Use the procedures listed above to verify that your other license file matches your partner server, and upgrade the license file for that machine as well.

Please review Licensing Information for important information that you should know about licensing.
