Naming Conventions

Naming conventions for storage servers, application servers, volumes, virtual volumes, and channels are largely consistent throughout the SANmelody software. Any object named in a DataCore GUI should be of the approved naming convention.

Warning: Choose the network name of the computer carefully–before installing the SANmelody product. Once your configuration is established, changing this name will disable SANmelody software.

Here are the basic naming convention rules:

  • Volumes, virtual volumes, snapshot sets, and channel names can have a maximum of 31 characters. Channel names must be unique within a partnership.

  • Application servers can have a maximum of 15 characters.

  • Must start with a letter.

  • Must end with a letter or digit.

  • Middle characters may be letters, digits,  or hyphens.

  • The name must only contain American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) characters.

  • Names are not case sensitive.

  • Do not re-name a mapped virtual volume.

  • Do not use underscores in the storage server computer name.

  • Do not change the computer name of a storage server once SANmelody product is installed or the SANmelody software will not start.
